Salesians of Don Bosco West Africa Province

Workshop in the Provincial House

June 17,,2016 - Ghana

The Provincial, Fr Michael Karikunnel, together with the help of the Economer, Fr Chris Nizniak and key staff of the provincial house, felt the urgency to put together a 2 day workshop to reflect on the Rector Major’s challenge which was reiterated in the just concluded Provincial Chapter 5 which focused on consolidation, restructuring, planning and giving direction to the Salesian work in the AFW Province. This reflection will help Salesians move from a “charity” and “institutional” mentality to a more systematic way of planning and developing our work in the mission.

The first day focused on clarifying the meaning and role of the Project Development Office (PDO) which was understood fundamentally as a provincial tool for the animation of the province. The Provincial Development Organism was coined. The role of Don Bosco Youth Network (DBYN) and the partnership with International Voluntary Services for Development (VIS) was clarified. The need was stressed for the PDO to move to the 2nd level, i.e. from a project management role to a more active role through the reflection of the Youth Ministry using the OPP as a point of departure.

The program today is focusing on presenting the PC5 document which is the main inspiration behind the OPP. This exercise will be a useful tool in isolating the main lines of action the whole province will begin to work together to achieve.
