Salesians of Don Bosco West Africa Province

Ghana Welcomes Fr. 聲gel

March 14,,2016 - Ghana

On the 6th day of his landmark visit West Africa English speaking province, Fr Ángel Fernandez Artime landed at Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana. With his secretary, Fr Horacio López, he was accompanied by the incoming and outgoing Provincials of AFW Province, Frs Michael Karikunnel and Jorge Crisafulli. Despite the late hour, the Provincial house community and other confreres turned out in numbers to meet them. The rector major will visit the novitiate community located in the mid-West of the country six hours away from Accra by road and return to Accra to round up his Ghana trip with the installation of the new provincial. He will also make a point to see for himself the work his Salesians are doing in the field of education, pastoral and especially the efforts made towards combating illegal migration and child trafficking.

Ghana is considered a peaceful country by many standards, and the people are quite friendly and blessed with a ricch cultural heritage that keeps visitors coming back. Like other countries trying to make a mark on the global stage, it has its own fair share of poverty, corruption and an undercurrent of economic hardship. The Salesians in this country, as in the other countries of the province, have listened to the yearning of the people, especially the very poor, and strove to find viable solutions. Indeed the spotlight will be on their work in the area of creating a shelter for trafficked children and those who have been either given away for a small amount by their biological parents because of dire situations in the family or have run away from abusive conditions that exist in their immediate or extended families.

As Don Bosco was able to bring hope and a renewal of effort to his Salesians and indeed the entire family of Saints, it is expected that the Rectoer Major’s presence will be a breath of fresh air and a restoration of zeal that the first Salesians in English speaking West Africa have been know for whenever the situations called on them to make self demanding sacrifices. In his goodnight, Fr Angel joked that he was much content to be among his confreres in Africa than he could have imagined in the Rome. With the concluding prayers, he retired to prepare for the 400km journey down to the novitiate.
