25th anniversary of Salesians presence in Ghana
· Where: Ashaiman - Sunyani - Tatale
· When: From December 11,,2016 to December 31,,2017
The Salesian Family in Ghana is celebrating a special anniversary this year. Exactly 25 years ago the first house of the Salesians of Don Bosco was founded in Odumase, on the outskirts of Sunyani. We want to celebrate this important date with all the communities in Ghana: members of the Salesian Family, friends, supporters, partners in cooperation, co-workers and especially many young people, to celebrate together in a family atmosphere.
The Salesians of Don Bosco came to Ghana in 1992. Bishop James Owusu of Sunyani invited the first pioneers (Fr. Isaias Torres from Venezuela, Fr. Michael Karikunnel from India, Fr. Ivan Stojanovic from Bosnia, Fr. Andreas Kroworsch and Bro. Michael Schmitz from Germany) for helping the local church in the work of evangelization and education needed for the moral and social development of this country.
The work for the less fortunate in different parts of the diocese began immediately after their arrival. A programme for street children in Sunyani (Don Bosco Boys Home) and an Oratory attached to "Mary Help of Christians" Parish in Odumase village provided first help for people in need.
Today the salesian community has grown and operates also in Ashaiman and Tatale to meet the educational needs of children and youth.
