The history of the Salesians started with a dream that little Johnny Bosco had at the age of 9 in Becchi, Italy. That dream was the starting point of a project of life focused on the salvation of Youth. His dream became true and covered the whole world: Europe, The Americas, Asia, Oceania and… Africa! Yes, Don Bosco dreamt about his Salesians coming to Africa: he saw them in Africa. In 1978, Don Vigano, 7th successor of Don Bosco, launched the Project Africa. Today there are more than 1200 Salesians working in 43 African Countries! The Salesian presence in Anglophone West Africa started in 1979 with the arrival of the first 2 Salesians to Monrovia. In 1982, after the first visit of John Paul II to Nigeria, the first Salesian arrived in Nigeria, where houses were open in Ondo, Akure and Onitsha . The turn of Sierra Leone, Lungi came on 1986 and in 1994 the activities were extended to Freetown. The last born was Ghana: the first team of Salesians arrived to the Country in 1992. Today, that dream continues to grow… Accompany us in a journey throughtout Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone to see how the sons of Don Bosco continue to make true that first dream! “With a feeling of humble gratitude we believe that the Society of St. Francis de Sales came into being not as a merely human venture but by the initiative of God.” (Source: Const. art. 1)
